Training Ground
Signing up to do an enduro event where your training ground is Guernsey is difficult. Guernsey is situated 30 miles west of the Normandy coast in France and 75 miles south of England, lying in the Gulf of St Malo.
The island is approximately 24 sq miles (63 sq kilometres). Our lowest points is the Atlantic Ocean at 0m anfd the highest point is an unnamed location on Sark 114m. So no high altitude training or long climbs to love the hills.
For endurance cycling the maths does not really work.
However, as a small island with zero commute and low taxation system (income tax rate of 20%. There are ho higher rates. NO CGT, no council tax and no VAT), we get to “land hop” – as opposed to bunny hop – to the UK and France with relative ease and huge expense! The weather is relatively good. The warmth and sunshine of Northern France in the British Isles – meaning less use of waterproof and base layers than blighty. We do get huge headwinds on the west coast given the next piece of land is America.
Our training has consisted of some scenic routes on the island also adjoining islands and also training camps to SA (Dec 05 and Mar 06), Spain (Jan 06) and UK (August 05 an Apr 06). All towards the Cape Epic event in (April 06).
The local cycle club has an active calendar and training rides. http://www.guernseyvelo.org.gg
